16. Is Mind Mapping Brainstorming?
No, it’s not., mind mapping is the organization of your brainstorming. A mind map is a visual representation of connected ideas and information whereas brainstorming as I define it, is a projectile vomiting of ideas, that is your process of coming up with ideas to a problem you’re trying to fix in a random order as they come across your mind. So, your purpose with brainstorming is to come up with as many ideas as possible without having to worry about relationship or linkage between them. At this stage you only want to capture them. Later on, when you set down and reorganize those ideas and group them by order or priority or sequence or theme, that’s a mind map.
This makes brainstorming an initial step of the mind map and understanding this distinction is important because both the mind mapping and brainstorming has different purposes, different tools or different usage of the same tool.
